Treat unknown materials with care
Asbestos awareness is especially important before refurbishment, maintenance, demolition, drilling or work that breaks into existing building fabric. Older buildings can contain asbestos in places that are not obvious from a normal visual check.
If a material may contain asbestos, stop work and escalate it. Do not assume it is safe because it looks ordinary, has been painted over or is hidden behind a newer finish.
Check the information before work starts
Before starting work that could disturb building fabric, teams should confirm whether enough asbestos information is available for the work area.
- Check whether the building was built or refurbished before 2000.
- Ask for the asbestos register, survey or project-specific survey information.
- Confirm the information covers the exact work area and work method.
- Brief workers on what to do if they find suspected asbestos.
- Record decisions, exclusions and stop-work actions.
Awareness is not permission to work on asbestos
Asbestos awareness training helps workers recognise possible asbestos risks and know when to stop. It does not make someone competent to remove or work on asbestos-containing materials.
Some asbestos work must be completed by a licensed asbestos contractor. If the work scope is unclear, the safest next step is to stop, isolate the concern and get competent advice.
Keep a clear audit trail
Useful records include the register checked, survey reference, briefing attendance, photos of the area before work, stop-work notes, specialist advice and any revised RAMS or permit records.
