Link substances to the actual method
COSHH controls are strongest when they are connected to the task being completed. The RAMS should explain where substances are used, who is exposed, what controls apply and what evidence is needed.
What to include
- Product name, substance type and safety data sheet reference.
- Task or process where the substance is used.
- Exposure routes and people affected.
- Ventilation, extraction, containment or substitution controls.
- PPE, storage, transport and disposal arrangements.
- Emergency actions, spill response and first aid notes.
Avoid disconnected assessments
A COSHH assessment stored away from the RAMS can be missed during planning. Keep the substance record connected to the method statement and project so supervisors know which controls apply.
Review when products change
If a product, supplier or method changes, the COSHH record should be reviewed. The team should not assume that an old assessment applies to a new product.
